696: Byron Campbell

Byron Campbell cost the city of Concord, CA, $1.3 million when a jury found him guilty of sexual harassment and the city guilty of failing to respond adequately to the complaint.

Rita Hardin sued Campbell and the Concord City Council in 1993. She contended that the former mayor had created a hostile work environment by making sexually suggestive remarks and unwanted sexual advances toward her and other City Hall employees. She included the City because she claimed, they retaliated when she complained and did nothing to help her, forcing her to resign.

This was a second trial as the first verdict was thrown out by the judge who said the jurors misinterpreted the evidence.
