Daniel Savala was a youth pastor at Clover Pass Community Church in Ketchikan, Alaska, in the late 90s when he sexually abused children at the church. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but all but 90 days was suspended. Letters from Assemblies of God clergy organized by Eli Stewart and Eli Gautreaux pled for leniency. Savala has been associated with the Chi Alpha, a Christian campus ministry since at least 1989. He spent many years working as an itinerant pastor, going from one Chi Alpha chapter to another.
Chi Alpha and associated churches allowed Savala to minister and mentor children despite his being a registered sex offender. He is alleged to have used Chi Alpha to groom sexual abuse victims.
According to survivors, he groomed youth through Chi Alpha on several Texas universities. He taught them that mutual masturbation was a religious experience. He was arrested in June 2023 for sexually abusing two children with a Chi Alpha pastor at Baylor University. Five Texas universities have suspended their association with Chi Alpha.
